What Does USS Stand For?

What does USS stand for? USS is an acronym for many things in many disciplines, such as medicine, computers, the Navy, and manufacturing.  

Most people know of one thing that USS stands for. That would be United States Ship. The Navy has several different classifications of ships. These include:

• Aircraft Carriers - These ships are like an airfield on the water. They allow landings and take-offs around the globe. Their primary purpose is to assist combat operations of aircraft.
• Amphibious Assault Ships - These deploy ground troops in remote locations.  They can launch an amphibious assault and allow operations on the ocean that are long-lasting.
• Battleships -  These ships are heavily armed and fortified for battle with other warships. They can also assault targets that are on the coast. 
• Cruisers - These can engage several targets at the same time and can have a supportive role or pursue an independent course.
• Destroyers - These are fast moving warships that have both offensive and defensive capabilities and can also assist or work independently.
• Frigates - These ships have the job of protecting other ships and can also attack submarines. 
• Submarines -  Subs can travel above or below the water and carry out rescue and research missions. They can also perform specific tasks during wartime.

Other USS Meanings

USS stands for many more things than just ships.

• The United Seamen's Service was founded in 1942 to provide services to help out American seamen and their families, seamen of all countries, and others involved in the maritime industry.  
• The Unit Supply Specialist is a person who is responsible for the general upkeep and maintenance of all Army supplies and equipment.
• Undersea Systems designs and make systems for detecting underwater threats.
• United States Steel is the largest steel producer in the United States.
• United States Swimming is the national organization for the sport of swimming in the United States.
• Ultrasonic Soldering is a way to solder by vibrating the soldering iron that disrupts the metal’s oxide film.

• There are two uses of the USS acronym in the medical arena. An Ultrasound Scan uses sound waves to map the organs and other internal structures inside the body.
• Upshaw-Schulman Syndrome A is a rare blood condition where the formation of small blood clots reduce your platelet numbers and can cause kidney failure.
• Under-Seat Steering is an option for recumbent bicycles. Recumbent bikes have a small chair-like seat, so you are in a more reclined posture. You can also have a choice of above seat steering, which is more like a regular bike.  
• USS is used as an acronym in several computer related fields. Part of the operating system for IBM is the Unix System Services.
• Two more in the computr field are Unsynchronized System and User Support Services, which is responsible for software, hardware and other resources.
• NASA uses USS for Unique Support Structure and User Services Subsystem.

There is yet another answer for, “What does USS stand for?” and that would be for Star Trek fans. USS actually stands for United Space Ship, but in a few of Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek episodes, it was referred to as United Star Ship.
