Which Breed of Horse Originated in Czechoslovakia?

Considering that the country of Czechoslovakia only came into existence in 1918 as part of the Treaty of Versailles to end World War I, no breed of horse could possibly have originated there. However, the area that became Czechoslovakia was once part of the Austrian-Hungarian empire. As such, several horses are known to have originated in this area.

Kladruber

The line of royal Kladruber horses was established in 1579 by Rudolf II, a Holy Roman Emperor. While he was mostly known for being a bad leader to his people and causing the Thirty Years War, he was instrumental in helping to establish the line of horses that still exists today.

Kladruber horses were originally bred to pull carriages. According to tradition, three color variations existed for different royal functions. White Kladruber were bred to pull the carriages during standard events and during happy ceremonies. Black Kladruber horses were bred to pull the carriages during sad or somber occasions. Breeders also produced a strain of grey.

To pull a cart, carriage or to work on a farm, a horse must be large in stature. An average Kladruber often measures between 16 and 17 hands high. (One hand is the equivalent of four inches, and a horse is measured from the ground to its withers or shoulders).

Kladrubers have good dispositions and stamina, plus they can live a long time. For these reasons, the horse also makes a good dressage horse.

Hucul

This rugged mountain horse, which stands between thirteen and fourteen hands high, may have originated in the Romanian mountains or further east. However, breeding of the horses extends as far as the Austrian-Hungary area. The horse may have originally been bred as a cavalry mount. It has also been used as a pack horse due to its sturdiness and a mount for children, due to its docile nature and compact size. Breeding of the horse in Czechoslovakia began in 1922, a few years after the formation of the country. In 1972, the Hucul Club was established in Czechoslovakia due to the dire circumstances of the breeds numbers. Today their numbers are still in danger as around five hundred breeding Hucul mares exist.

Shagya-Arabian

Shagya-Arabians have a two hundred year old breeding history. They were developed and bred in the Austria-Hungary region, specifically in Hungary, but were also known to have been bred in Czechoslovakia, Romania and Bulgaria. They were bred for intelligence and endurance, combining the hardiness of a Desert Arabian with the needs of a more modern riding horse. They have been used in cavalry, light riding, parades and dressage. Breeding in the United States didn’t begin until 1986.

Lipizzan

The most famous and well known of the Czechoslovakian breeds is the Lipizzan. They are most well known for their style of walking that seems to imitate a dance or ballet. The breed has origins over two thousand years old. Archduke Karl, who ruled four Austrian provinces, set up the first stud farm near Lipizza. These horses have been highly prized over the centuries, being moved from areas of war to ensure their survival. Today, they are used in dressage and other performance shows where their very stylized jumps can be admired by all.

There Is Not One Answer

The Austria-Hungary part of Europe has been home to a variety of important and exceptional horse breeds throughout history. Due to the changing landscape of certain European countries, it would be difficult to ascribe just one answer to the question of which breed of horse originated in Czechoslovakia. Many of these and other horse breeds were already established when the country of Czechoslovakia was formed in 1918. The history of the area, however, can be said to have originated these notable breeds.
