What Do Mice Eat?

Are you really interested in studying mammals. Of course you’ve heard about mice before, and you’ve most likely even seen a mouse before, but how much do you really know about these animals? Let’s learn a little something about mice, their behavior, their habitat, and what mice eat!

When you consider what mice eat, you have to consider the mice by different types.

  • White footed mouse - fungi, seeds, herbs, roots, and fruits
  • Deer mouse - fruits, seeds, fungi, leaves, and antropods
  • House mouse - human food such as cereal, grain and crackers
  • Field mouse - grass, tree bark, nuts and seeds
  • Phillip's Mouse - leaves, grass, seeds, and other foliage
  • Matthey's Mouse - foliage and vegetation 

A mouse is part of the rodent family, and is a small mammal. There are many different types of mice, and they are found throughout the world.

Some types of mice are even kept as pets. Other types of mice are seen as dangerous to crops, and thus are exterminated.

White Footed Mouse

The diet of the the Peromyscus leucopus, also known as the White-footed Mouse, consists mainly of: fungi, seeds, herbs, roots, and fruits.

This mouse is nocturnal, however, you might occasionally see it during the day.

It is found throughout North America. Specifically, you might be able to see one in the southwest of the United States, or in areas of Mexico. It can grow up to about three inches in length, not measuring the tail. It can weigh up to twenty to thirty grams, and its lifespan is about forty-five months.

Deer Mouse

The diet of the Peromyscys maniculatus, also known as the Deer Mouse consists mainly of: fruits, seeds, fungi, leaves, and antropods. Interestingly, the mouse will alternate its diet as the seasons change, eating the vegetation that’s abundant for the season.

This mouse can be found throughout North America except in the far north of the continent and in the southeast of the United States.

You might be able to recognize a deer mouse because it has a long and multicolored tail. The mouse usually has a brown coat, with a white underbelly. Occasionally, the coat might be black or white. It’s a small mouse, and grows up to about three inches.

This mouse is nocturnal, and during the day the mouse will live in trees or burrows made out of plant material.

House Mouse

The Mus musculus, also known as the house mouse, usually eat human food, consuming cereal, grain, crackers, or things of that nature. The mouse can further contaminate the food by passing salmonellosis into the food that it is eating.

This mouse lives mainly in areas associated with humans. They can grow up to about ten centimeters in length, and their tail can be about five to ten centimeters long as well.

They usually weigh about twenty grams, and they can be grey, white, black, or brown.

Field Mouse

The Microtus pennsylvanicus, also known as the Meadow Vole or Field Mouse, is an herbivore. It usually eats the grass in its environment. However, during the winter when grass is not available, it will eat tree bark. This mouse will also eat nuts and seeds, if the mouse can locate them. 

This mouse is found throughout North American and Alaska. Currently, it is an endangered mouse. It has a short tail, and a long body. It has dark brown or black fur, and can weigh up to fifty grams. It can be about sixteen centimeters in length, and their forepaws and hind paws differ in the amount of toes they contain.

Phillip’s Mouse

The Mus phillipsi, also known as Phillip’s Mouse, has a vegetarian diet. It consumes leaves, grass, seeds, and other foliage that it can find.

The mouse is found only throughout India. Its natural habitat is tropical dry forests, grassland, or hot deserts. Currently, it’s threatened by habitat loss in India.

Matthey’s Mouse

The Mus Mattheyi, also known as Matthey’s Mouse, consumes a variety of foliage, or whatever vegetation that it can find.

It is part of the Muridae family and it’s found in a variety of locations, such as: Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, or Ghana.
