How Big do Sea Eels Get?

Sea Eels grow to many different sizes, depending on the type, between two to eight feet long.  Whether or not you're a fan of eels, you might find it interesting to learn about them.

There are approximately 600 different types of eels, and the vast majority of them live in the sea. Each type of eel grows to a different size; therefore, if you have a specific type of eel in mind whose size you would like to discover, your best bet would be to try and research that specific type of eel.

Despite the fact that there are so many types of eels, scientists do not know a whole lot about this group of sea creatures or how big these sea eels get. Therefore, even if you are looking for the size of a specific eel, you might not be able to find it.

Let us look at the size of the eels for which we do have information. 

American Sea Eel

Eels are often classifed into groups based upon their land of origin - for example, the  American sea eel. Generally, these creatures begin their journeys in the Gulf of Mexico and eventually travel up the Atlantic coastline near the United States and Canada within their first year of life.

When an American sea eel spawns, she lays between 20 and 30 million eggs. When the babies are born, they are so tiny that if you did not know better, you could easily confuse them with worms. The female grows to approximately five feet long, while the males grow to only around three feet long. This species is one of the few where this is so.

Electric Eel

There is a good chance that you are most familiar with the electric eel, since they often make their way into pop culture and the media.

Maybe you are afraid of these creatures which thrive in the waters of South America, and perhaps you should be since they can emit a burst of electricity worth 600 volts. They also grow to be quite large and certainly significantly larger than at least the male American eel. They can grow to be over eight feet long, although most of them fall into the six to eight foot category. Furthermore, these creatures reach weights of approximately 44 pounds.

The large size of an electric eel is directly related to their electric charge. They have three main organs that produce electricity, which are known as the Main Organ, the Hunter's Organ, and the Sach's Organ. They take up about 80 percent of the electric eel's body, causing them to reach these large sizes.

Some other eels tend to fall into the same category when it comes to size:

• Garden eel
• Jeweled moray eel
• Snowflake eel
• Tessalata eel
• Wolf eel
• Zebra moray eel

These are some of the smaller eels in the family of eels. They are all the same size. In comparison to the gigantic electric eels, these little guys seem miniscule. Some of them will grow to be three feet long, like their male American cousins; however, you will find that most of them are actually only between two and three feet long.
