What Are the Different Types of Scorpions?

In the scientific community, scorpions are identified as being in the order Scorpions are in the same class as spiders, Arachnida. All scorpions have the same physical appearance that includes a two-segmented body, the cephalothorax and the abdomen, eight legs, a tail that it carries curved over the back with a venomous stinger on the end, and a set of claws that it uses to hold or grab prey while it eats. Scorpions are known to live all over the world on every continent and are only non-existent in the country of New Zealand and on the continent of Antarctica. There are many different types of scorpions that exist in the world today.

Here is a list of some examples of the different types of scorpions.

Albino Scorpion

  • These scorpions are cave dwellers and lack pigmentation of the skin like most other albino animal species.
  • The Albino Scorpion does not have eyes either since nature decided eyes would be pointless for an animal that lives its life constantly in the dark.
  • Albino Scorpions are extremely rare and are considered highly valuable to scorpion collectors.

Red Scorpion

  • Red Scorpions are found mostly in arid regions of the Earth and their venom is highly potent to human beings, especially small children.
  • A sting from a Red Scorpion can actually kill an adult human being within a couple of hours without immediate treatment.
  • Red Scorpions are nocturnal hunters who feed on insects, spiders, centipedes, and even other smaller scorpions that it comes across while hunting.
  • During the day, the scorpion remains in a burrow to rest.
  • The Red Scorpion is identified by its physical appearance having an orange-red body with transparent red legs.

Black Scorpions

  • This scorpion is also called the Asian Forest Scorpion.
  • This type of scorpion calls tropical regions of Asia home and can be found most prevalently in the countries of Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.
  • The sting of a black scorpion is not deadly, but it is very painful said to equal that of a sting from a hornet.
  • Black scorpions are known to be quite hardy and can live up to seven years.
  • They are also known to be quite a bit larger than the average scorpion and will live within nature under logs and other types of debris.
  • Black Scorpions are also very territorial and are known to be aggressive even towards members of their own species when one encroaches on the other’s territory.

Emperor Scorpion

  • Emperor Scorpions are one of the oldest living things on the planet and science has determined they have existed on this Earth for over three hundred million years.
  • The Emperor Scorpion is the largest type of scorpion, however, its venom is harmless.
  • Unlike most scorpions that are nocturnal hunters, the Emperor Scorpion actually hunts during the day.
  • They use their larger claws to grab prey as they hide under logs and other debris on the forest floor in order to ambush their unsuspecting prey due to their lack of potent venom.
  • The Emperor Scorpion can be found mostly in West Africa, the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Senegal.

These are just a few examples of the different types of scorpions. There are many other types of scorpions that can be found all over the planet in all different parts of the world. There are actually, in total, more than 375 unique species of scorpions so these mentioned are just a snapshot at the world population of scorpion species.
