How Can I Identify Bugs in the House?

Everyone has experienced a problem with bugs in their house at one time or another and when you find yourself in this situation, you may wonder how to identify them. Some of these bugs can become pests and it may be necessary to identify them accurately in order to determine how to get rid of them. You can identify bugs in your home the same way you would identify bugs as if you found them in nature, with the exception of examining the environment in which they live. This is because once they are inside the home they are out of their normal element.

Here are a few simple steps you can take to identify the bugs in your home:

  • Take a picture of the bug that is in your home. The picture will capture the color, shape, size, and other specific characteristics of the insect.
  • Take the information that you are able to gather from this picture to identify the insect. This could be as simple as getting a book from the local library or bookstore and paging through it until you find a particular bug that resembles the one in the picture. You could do the same thing by looking at images of bugs on various identification websites or by using the menus to input the bug's characteristics at Insect Identification.org.

Where the bugs are present in your home can help with identifying them as well.

Damp Wood

For instance, there are house pests known as termites that can become a real problem if they are not taken care of. You will find these types of bugs eating the wood in your home which will cause it to become weak, soft, and ultimately cause the wood in your home to rot. Letting this pest problem get out of hand could spell certain disaster for your home.

  • Termites typically are described as looking like a white ant.
  • The worker termites are about 3 to 6 millimeters in length and the ones that actually reproduce are a bit larger.
  • Termites can be transparent in color or they may have a copper appearance depending on the species of termite.

There are other characteristics you can use to identify termites as well, but these are the two main characteristics.

Bedding

Another problem insect in the home is the bed bug. Bed bugs live in mattresses and pillows in the homes of people. Bed bugs are a problem because they are so small and because most of the time they come out only in the middle of the night.

  • Bed bugs can be found hidden under the cording or in the seams of a mattress.
  • Bed bugs look like very tiny apple seeds.
  • You can identify these types of bugs by examining the bites they deliver to people who are sleeping in beds infested with them.
  • Bed bug bites resemble small to large size red welts on the body that itch.
  • You can also find telltale signs like droppings and shed bed bug skins around the mattress.

Identify Bugs in the House Based on Their Picture

Many of the other bugs that can invade your home and become a nuisance can be identified in one of the two manners stated above. Another way you can get help identifying bugs in your home so you can effectively combat them is to take a picture and submit the picture to a bug identification website or take the snapshot to someone who specializes in the identification or extermination of bugs.

It is important with bugs that are present in your home to identify them properly because it will take proper identification to get rid of the bugs if they happen to become a problem.
