How to Identify Rodent Droppings

Being able to identify rodent droppings is not a skill most people want to acquire. However, realizing that you might have rodent droppings is a situation that requires you to act, and to act quickly before a (hopefully) small problem becomes a big one. Finding a small pile of what you believe to be rodent droppings can make you uncomfortable in your own home, and in order to act properly you have to know exactly what you’re dealing with.

If you are concerned about identifing mouse and rate droppings, consider the advice below:

  • The first step is to make sure that the droppings you see are indeed from a rodent.
  • Mouse and rat droppings are almost identical, and in many cases the droppings are never evacuated singularly.
  • Mouse and rat droppings generally are slender, tubular-shaped pellets that are roughly 1/8 of an inch in length.
  • The droppings are often tapered or rounded on one or both ends.
  • The color of a rodent dropping varies on the diet that the rodent is able to sustain. However, while you’re looking more at the shape, it’s also important to know that a rodent dropping will almost always be either brown or black.
  • In most cases, rodent droppings are found in warm, dry areas that offer cover, although if you leave things like open food or breadcrumbs on your counters you may also find them right out in the open.

If you think you’ve found a pile of rodent droppings in your home, it’s best you take action immediately because rodents reproduce very quickly and you could have an infestation in no time.
