What Smells Repel Dogs?

While we all love our canine friends, sometimes we are looking for smells that we can use to repel dogs. Maybe they are going into areas of the house which they are not supposed to enter, or perhaps they are getting into the garden. There are several ways to keep them away.

You have a few different options if you need to repel dogs:

  • Chili powder
  • Vinegar
  • Citrus fruits
  • Ammonia
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Ready made dog repellent spray

Items from the Kitchen to Repel Dogs

Head no further than your kitchen to find some smells that repel dogs.

  • Chili powder - You could use chili powder if you would like. The chemicals in the powder irritate the dog's nose. Sprinkle some chili powder around the area that you wish to repel the animal from, and the smell will prevent the dog from getting too close or even returning to the area. Chili powder is often found in dog repellents that you can purchase from a pet shop.
  • Vinegar - Dogs have an extremely strong sense of smell. What only smells moderately sour to humans will smell extremely terrible to a dog. When you are using vinegar, start by putting vinegar on cotton balls and placing them in the area from which you want to repel your dog. Vinegar can be harmful to plants and, in fact can kill the plant if you throw some vinegar on top of plants. Do not fill up a bowl or dish with vinegar, as your dog may try to drink it.
  • Citrus fruits - Cut up lemons, oranges, or other types of citrus fruits and place them around the area from which you would like to keep your dog.

Chemicals to Repel Dogs

We suggest that you try the items from your kitchen first, as they prevent a more natural way of preventing dogs from going to certain spots. However, you can also use ammonia or rubbing alcohol as a dog repellent.

As with the vinegar, put these liquids on cotton balls if they are around plant life, since they could kill the plants. Please watch your dog to ensure that he or she does not try to eat these cotton balls.

Of course, another option would be to simply go out to the pet store and ask the employees what ready made spray that is safe for dogs.

Be sure to take special care when using any chemical around your pet. Never put chemicals in a bowl, dish, container, etc.. Your dog might think that it is water for him or her. Dogs should never drink these chemicals or other products not intended for consumption.

Take Special Safety Care

The health of your dog needs to be of utmost importance when selecting a dog repellent. While all of these remedies have been used at some point on other dogs, your own pet has a specific character. Therefore, we have to say that you must call your vet to check to see if these remedies are safe for your pet.

How could they be safe for one dog and not another you ask? Well, just like people, dogs have different reactions to substances. Furthermore, they might have a health condition that prevents them from being near one or more of the following products. All it takes is a quick phone call to confirm the safeness of the method you would like to use.
