Where in Africa Do Chimps Live?

Chimps primarily live in the central part of Africa. However, there used to be many more chimps on the continent than there are today.

In the case of African chimps, they can be found, in the wild, throughout the continent. However, the best answer to where chimps in Africa live in that they live  primarily in the middle part of the continent, which is largely comprised of rain forest areas.

Most of us, when we think of chimps living in the wild, tend to assume that they inhabit warm, wet areas like rain forests, and in general this is a correct assumption and can give you some guidance in determining where in Africa chimps live.

The chimps in Africa, like in various continents throughout the world, certainly tend to be found in their greatest numbers in these types of warm, wet rainforest areas. But chimps are also surprisingly adaptable, and scientists have discovered that for the most part a chimp can make a natural habitat under a wide range of conditions.

Chimps used to be found over much greater surface areas in Africa, but things have changed in recent years. In order to understand why chimps live in a more limited area in Africa now than they did in past years, it’s important to understand the few criteria that chimpanzees do have in order to make a particular habitat into a home.

Chimps Problems in African Habitats

Most people know that chimps are climbers and tree-dwellers. They do this both for comfort and transport, and for safety reasons. Therefore, when a chimp is choosing a place to live, it won’t go somewhere without the shade, protection, and height advantage of trees, preferably a fairly heavy forest. Surprisingly, chimps can live in savannahs and even plains, provided there are clumps of trees nearby in which they can create their havens.

The loss of chimps in most of Africa, then, is related to a huge influx of loggers, who have removed large areas of forestry and scraped the land clean. While this is an environmental tragedy on any level, it’s particularly problematic because, by removing trees in most of the continent, the logging has driven the chimps to the equatorial region instead, where they take shelter in the rain forests.

Chimps and Threatened Rain Forests

Unfortunately, the rain forests themselves are dwindling in size as well, thanks to human actions; what’s more, the chimps that are taking refuge there are increasing the population and putting a strain on the natural resources, meaning such a situation won’t be sustainable for much longer into the future. As it stands now, then, it’s an unfortunate truth that the future of chimps in Africa is uncertain as many of the chimps in Africa that live in rain forests on the continent are being threatened.

Need to Protect the Chimp

Chimpanzees are a well-known, beloved species of ape inhabiting various areas of the world today. Members of the same family branch as humans – as well as orangutans and gorillas – chimps are fascinating mammals with well-developed brains and habits. Many years of study have been devoted to observing them in captivity as well as in the wild, and now the chimp habitat in Africa needs to be protected if we want to make sure these amazing creatures continue to flourish.
