Can Dell Printers Hook Up to IBM Computers?

Can Dell printers hook up to IBM computers? The answer to this question is usually yes, but it depends on the printer, the computer, how old both are, what operating system you have installed on your computer and whether you have the required drivers or not.

Connecting a printer to your PC is typically easiest when the printer and the computer you’re using were made by the same manufacturer. In these cases, it’s usually a simple manner of connecting the printer to the computer and allowing the computer to recognize the printer and then you will be able to use it.

However, with the “plug and play” options that most PCs and operating systems have, in many cases, this process of connecting printers can even be taken care of automatically when the printer and computer aren't from the same manufacturer. As such, in some cases, a Dell printer can easily hook up to an IBM computer just by plugging it in and allowing your computer to recognize it.

There may be a problem, however, when you begin incorporating printers that aren’t compatible with the computer you’re using. For example, if you have an older printer or an older computer, or the particular printer you have isn't plug-and-play compatible with your computer, getting the Dell printer to work with your IBM will become a little trickier.

Making Your Dell Printer Work

There is usually a way to get most Dell printers to hook up to almost any IBM computer, but you'll need to know the process for doing so:

  1. Connect the printer to the computer you’re using, and allow the computer to try and recognize it. Both your computer’s motherboard and your operating system must support the printer you’re using, because if one does and the other doesn’t, your printer isn't going to work.
  2. If the operating system that you use is able to recognize the printer you’ve connected, the operating system will usually recognize the driver for your printer and enable it within the computer. The installation of these drivers is necessary so that you’re able to send information to the printer as well as receive information from it.
  3. If the computer cannot recognize the hardware, you may have to search and install the driver for your printer manually. You can generally do this if you have the installation CD for your printer, or you can search for the printer’s driver online, typically at the manufacturer’s website.
  4. Once you locate the driver, you can download and install it to your computer and this will typically allow you to use the printer without any problems.
  5. After you’ve installed the driver for your Dell printer and enabled it manually, there may be registry problems that still hinder your ability to use the printer with your computer. In some cases, you may have to download a registry correction program that will allow your computer’s hardware setup to be compatible with your new printer. If you determine that this is a necessary step, you should first research dependable websites that provide these types of programs. Once you’ve corrected the registry error, you should be able to use your printer without any problems.

If you follow these instructions, the only Dell printers that won't work with your IBM computers are those that don't make a compatible driver for your PC. There shouldn't be very many of those, so you should be able to successfully connect your Dell to your IBM.
