How to Copy a DVD on Your Computer

Do you know how to copy a DVD on your computer? Copying your media straight to your computer, or “ripping” a disc to your computer’s hard drive, usually only depends on a few things in order to be done properly.

Here are the steps for how to copy a DVD on your computer:

  • Check that you have to have a sufficient amount of space available on your computer to hold the file.
  • You have to have the rights to transfer the disc’s information to your computer. This means you have to have purchased the movie yourself.  Some commercial DVDs have special protections on them that prevent you from copying the information onto your computer. If this is the case, while there are ways to get around this using various software programs, breaking this copy protection is not legal.
  • You also need to have a program that allows you to rip DVD files to your computer, such as an updated Windows Media Player program or another media player with a rip function.
  • Once your DVD is inserted into your computer, you’ll have the option to play the DVD with your media player.
  • From your media player, you can choose the rip function to create a folder in your media library to store the file after it’s ripped.

Now you know how to copy a DVD on your computer.
