How to Remove Windows from your Computer

There may be a number of different reasons that you want to delete everything from your computer right down to your Windows operating system: perhaps you are selling your computer and don't want it to go with a registered copy of your operating system installed on it, or perhaps you want to install another operating system to replace the one you’re currently using. No matter the circumstance, if you want to remove Windows from your computer, you’ll have to do a bit of technical computing in order to carry out this task.

Here are the steps for how to remove Windows from your computer:

  • First, you’ll have to access your computer’s boot menu by rebooting your computer with your windows CD in the disk drive.
  • As your computer is rebooting, press the designated access key before the operating system is loaded.  
  • Once the computer’s boot menu is displayed, press the “R” button in order to enter the computer’s recovery console.
  • After the recovery console is entered, you’ll see a black screen with the white letters C:\WINDOWS>
  • At this point, you need to enter the text: “format c:/ fs:ntfs”,
  • Once you have entered the text, you’ll be warned that continuing will erase the hard drive.
  • Type in the letter “Y” and press “Enter,” which will then finalize the process.
  • After the hard drive has been formatted, there will be no remaining information left in your computer- including Windows.

Now you know now how to remove Windows from your computer and you can either install a new operating system or do whatever you wish with your blank computer hard drive.
