Explain How an ISP Works

Understanding the mechanics behind an Internet connection is not necessary to using it; however, it enriches our appreciation behind the art of Internet connection.

Connecting to the Internet

The function of an ISP, which stands for Internet Service Provider, is to connect a computer to the Internet. If you have ever encountered troubles with your Internet connection, you might notice that a message regarding the ISP may pop up. This may cause you to wonder, exactly what role does this ISP have in the connection to the Internet?

  1. Not just anyone can tap into the services of an ISP. Generally, at the beginning you will need to have someone from your Internet provider's company establish the connection. After that, you will need to log in to the connection.
  2. The ISP will then receive your information in its modem pool. Here, your information will be verified and you will be permitted to enter into the system.
  3. You are assigned an IP address. What this means is slightly complex. When you visit a website, your IP address is recorded. Have you ever seen shows or films where people have traced a message back to a specific IP address? Well, that is how it is done. Tracking devices allow you to see the IP address of a person who accessed a certain website. Since each person is assigned a unique IP address by the ISP company, the company can tell who last visited the site.
  4. Just like you have your own IP address, each website does as well. Therefore, when you are visiting a website, what you are actually doing is requesting the IP address of the server machine holding those sites.
  5. When you put in the URL, that information is received by the modem pole and the ISP connects the person to that modem pole.
  6. Various lines and routers work together to connect the individual to the requested site, as the ISP works to find the IP address that the person has requested and then presents it to that user.

When we are on the Internet, we are able to get a wealth of information in only a couple of seconds. We bet that you did not realize what a complex process is involved every single time that you type in a web address!

Considerations About ISPs

In our explanation of how ISPs work, we used some technical terms and we really got down to exactly what an ISP does, and how the different components of the process of visiting a website interact with each other.

Here's an even more simplified explanation of how an ISP works. In its most basic form, an ISP helps people connect to the Internet much in the same way as a telephone allows two people to chat. Everyone has a unique number. When you enter a URL into your browser, you are actually dialing up a number of that website. The ISP provider, like the telephone company, is in charge of connecting one number to another.
