Spiders are used by search engines on the Internet to peruse the Internet and its websites, checking for content, hyperlinks and different resource links. The information retrieved by the spiders is used for multiple purposes by the search engines and browsers including establishing search engine ranking results.

Understanding the purpose and function of spiders is essential for anyone who is hoping to create a web page to be viewed by others, since spiders can help potential readers to find the site:

  • These spiders, or web-bots, are automatically help the search engines know what you’re looking for - in many cases before you finish typing it. (For example, if you start to type something into Google, it often finishes your thought for you.)
  • The spiders are basically information seekers that go from website to website, scanning each site they visit for what could be new or useful information.
  • Spiders depend on any tags they’ve taken note of or websites that have recently become more popular to help identify and track information. 

Operation of Spiders

Many different websites across the span of the Internet use these “spiders,” some more than others. In general, however, they are an efficient way of updating databases and search categories that allow users to obtain a vast amount of information on a steady basis.

The most active spider that is utilized on the Internet is the one developed by Google, which is called the “googlebot.” This particular spider is used so often it will scan a popular website (based on the number of people that visit it daily) up to several times daily to record any updates that the site may have published.
