How to Go About Becoming a Musician

As you are scouting out possible career options, you might be considering becoming a musician. Doing so will require work and effort; however, if you are happy in the end, it will be worth it.

Often, it seems like there are so many people in the music industry. But how do we become one of them?

  • Get involved with music, whether it be with a church choir, teaching an instrument, etc.
  • Major in a music-related field
  • Make a career out of music as a hobby
  • Make a CD and go out in search of someone to listen to it

Get Involved in Music in Some Capacity

Chances are, if you want to become a musician, you probably play an instrument of some sorts or you are able to sing well and enjoy doing so. If neither of those statements apply, you should really start there. Figure out what type of instrument you want to play or start taking voice lessons to perfect your voice and work out the kinks.

Once you are either playing an instrument or singing, you want to get involved in the public domain somehow. You can practice at home and be considered a musician; however, to become well known you need to play or sing for outsiders. Join the local church choir or the band at your school. Find out if you would be able to volunteer and give lessons to students a few days per week, or even consider giving lessons out of your home. Just putting yourself out there will allow people to see that you are a serious and professional musician.

Making a Career Out of Your Talents

Having a career as a musician can be extremely difficult. You might be able to get some local gigs or perform at an annual festival, but that is not going to be enough money for you to live on. You would need to be aware that you will have to supplement these gigs with some other sort of profession. This is where a college education comes into play. You do not need to drop music entirely just because you are going to get a college education.

Consider majoring in music business or music education. Perhaps you are even interested in musical theater. Majoring in any of these areas will give you the tools needed to bring your area of expertise into other fields that are still related to your musical dreams. You can become a music teacher and inspire youngsters to pursue their dreams, while you are still pursuing your own on the side.

Breaking Out Big Time as a Musician

You should try to make a CD and distribute it. Gain some confidence in yourself and send your CD to different music producers and record companies. You never know who you might get a call from. Do not limit yourself either. The worst that can happen is that a company says no. However, you will never know unless you at least give it try.

Do not think that becoming a musician has to be about fame. If you really have a love for the music, then that is what it should be about: your love of the music. It should not be able how much popularity you can gain or if you can become a superstar overnight. Sure, both of these might feel great, but what will feel the best is if you continue to pursue your dreams. In some capacity or another, you will make it.
