What Are Some Facts about Robin Hood?

Robin Hood is thought to be a fictional character, however there are some who feel differently.

People have been researching the historical accuracy of Robin Hood for quite awhile, and they often wind up attributing the character to a compilation of different people throughout time. However, one prominent researcher in the field, Doctor David Crook, has honed in on two characters who he believes could be the real Robin Hood. • One of the potential candidates for the inspiration for the real Robin Hood was a man named Robert Hood. In 1225, in Yorkshire, he fled from the law.
• The other possible person was named Robert of Wetherby. He lived at the same time as Robert Hood, and he was known as a major outlaw in his area. A royal letter states that he was hunted down by men because of his wrongdoings.
• Although this 13th century figure was quite possibly the basis for the Robin Hood of modern times, neither of the real people laid claim to any good actions in their lives.
• Sometime in the 15th century, a reference appeared referencing Robin Hood as being a person who did good. It was not a lengthy discussion at all, and nothing more was added for awhile.
• Finally, in either the 16th or 17th century, Robin Hood was attributed as being a man who stole from the rich and gave to the poor, which is the way that we know of him today. Between three and four hundred years after the real person lived, the story as we know it began to evolve.

Other Interpretations

Of course, as we stated, Doctor David Crook is only one researcher. Although he is a prominent figure in his field, there have been other theories about where Robin Hood comes from. Therefore, whether or not you agree with Crook could determine whether you consider these following bits of information to be fact or fiction:

• William de Fevre, an outlaw in the 13th century, changed his name to Robin Hood.
• Robin Hood was a generic name for outlaws around the 13th century.
• A man named Adam Hood had a son called Robert Hood who was born in 1280, and the legends radiate from this particular person.

Robin Hood: Fact or Fiction?

Like Cinderella, Snow White, and the scores of other characters that Disney has cooked up through the ages, we also tend to think of Robin Hood as just being a beautiful character that children are engaged in, look up to, and cherish for all of their youthful years. However, is that really the case with this outlaw in fox's clothing?

Countless productions of Robin Hood have been made throughout the years, and people still seem intrigued by this character, perhaps more so than many other figures which have graced our movie theaters and televisions. Why is that so? Perhaps our very souls know when to be intrigued. Perhaps they know when to crave truth, because truth can be found under the lights, camera, and action.

While we might never know if there was one singular Robin Hood who acted in exactly the same ways as our modern day hero, we can travel back in history and catch glimpses of real figures who inspired the Robin Hood who we know and love.
