McEntire attended South Eastern Oklahoma State University. She graduated on December 16, 1976, with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Music. No surprise there!

However, about a year or so before she graduated from college, McEntire was invited to sing the National Anthem at an Oklahoma City rodeo. Lucky for her, country music artist Red Seagall was in attendance. He was so intrigued and impressed by her singing, that he offered to help her get notice as a country music star. In 1975, McEntire signed a recording contract with Mercury Records.

Early Career of Reba McEntire

McEntire was born on March 28, 1955, making her 55 years old as of September 2010. Her mother, Jaqueline Smith, had always wanted to be a country music singer, but left those plans behind in favor of becoming a teacher. However, her love for country music continued, and she taught her children how to sing.

McEntire and two of her siblings, Pake and Susie, comprised "The Singing McEntires." They recorded "The Ballad of John McEntire," which was released on the Indie record label Boss. One thousand copies of the song were sold.
