National Lampoon’s Vacation is a classic family movie that stars Chevy Chase and his family, the Griswolds, as they go on a cross country summer family vacation and encounter a variety of hilarious problems along the way. There are a number of different scenic American areas shown in the film, and to accomplish this, the cast and crew had to visit a variety of locations while filming the movie.
The bulk of the movie takes place in the American West, but the locations are fictional, such as the amusement park “Walley World” that they are trying to reach, which does not exist in real life.
Much of the filming took place in the state of Colorado, specifically the area outside Pueblo, Colorado. The scenes involving Walley World and Uncle Eddie were filmed here, as well as the hotel scenes and the scenes involving their driving adventures, which were filmed on US Highway 50.
Some of the scenes involving the family home and the surrounding area, which the movie tells us is in Chicago, were actually filmed in Los Angeles and the surrounding area. A portion of the scenes were filmed near the Grand Canyon and also near Monument Valley Arizona.
National Lampoon's Vacation was filmed in various parts of the West and along US Highway 50; the locations may have fictional names but the scenes were cities and attractions which are available for any vacationer's enjoyment.
