Who Is the Author of The Sun Also Rises and The Old Man and The Sea?

Ernest Hemingway penned the novels The Sun Also Rises and The Old Man and The Sea in 1926 and 1952, respectively. These two works represent Hemingway’s first and last novels to be published while he was alive; the latter one earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954.

Ernest Hemingway was a reporter-turned author of The Sun Also Rises and The Old Man and The Sea.

The Sun Also Rises

Considered one of Hemingway’s greatest works, The Sun Also Rises is a story of four expatriate Americans living abroad in Europe. The story centers around the relationships between three men, Jake, Mike and Robert, all of whom are or were in love with Lady Brett Ashley. Because of her fashion sense and sexual prowess, she became an iconic figure for many real women of the 1920s. Hemingway devised the plot based on his own friends and a visit to Pamplona, Spain. The novel took him six weeks to write but six months to edit into his particular style.

The Old Man and the Sea

The Old Man and the Sea netted Hemingway a Pulitzer and the Nobel prize. The story centers around an old fisherman named Santiago and his struggle with a marlin. Santiago must endure days on the sea and attacks by sharks to make it back alive. Some critics have considered this novella a masterpiece while others have put it at only a minor work inconsistent with some of his more realistic novels.

Visiting Ernest Hemingway’s Home

Ernest Hemingway’s home in Key West, Florida, where he wrote many of his stories, still stands and has become a tourist destination. The preserved home is open for tours, parties, and weddings. In addition, the grounds house over sixty cats, some of whom are direct descendants from Hemingway’s famous six-toed cat given to him as a gift from a sea captain.
