Who Invented Cubism?

There are two artists who invented cubism as an art style, but they are not the creators of the term "cubism."  That was coined by critics.

The artists who invented the art form that later became known as cubism were Pablo Picasso, a Spanish painter and Georges Braque a French painter. These artists were painting in the early 1900s.

Cubism Style

The Cubism style of art directly removes almost all of the basic elements of art in its natural form, relying only on the two-dimensional canvas on which the painting is created.

  • Most Cubist art creators do use still-life images as inspiration for their art; but, things like depth and dimensional perspectives are not utilized.
  • Simple shapes are connected to create images, with angles and colors used which are not directly relevant to the inspiration images in many cases.
  • It is this often strangely attractive viewpoint that gives many Cubist art pieces their allure, especially when the image is of the human form.

"Cubism"

Now that you know who invented cubism as an art form, you might also want to know who coined the term used to describe it.

  • Early 1900 Paris art critics coined the term, stating that the art work they were looking at “looked as if it were made out of cubes.”
  • Louis Vauxcelles, an art critic, along with painter and critic Henri Matisse, first coined the term “Cubism” after viewing two art pieces, each done by either Picasso or Braque.

So, now you know who invented cubism and who named it.
