There are lots of nonpartisan organizations in the US. These organizations enjoy a special status under the law.
Within the landscape of American politics, a nonpartisan organization is one that is able to remain a non-profit, tax-exempt entity (with all the benefits associated with that status) AS LONG AS as it does not take part in any electoral procedures. This means a nonpartisan organization cannot:
- Participate in any political candidate’s election campaign, or
- Take a specific side with any governmental party.
There are over sixty nonpartisan organizations in the United States. While they aren’t allowed to participate in any electoral procedures, they are allowed to demonstrate opinions on some political issues.
Here are a few examples of some nonpartisan organizations in the United States so you can get a better understanding of what some of these organizations do.
Americans for Fair Taxation
- The Americans for Fair Taxation is a nonpartisan organization that was founded in 1994 and lobbies for the abolition of federal income taxes. This agenda involves backing the Fair Tax Act - an act that, if passed, would abolish the existence of the federal income tax and the Internal Revenue Service.
- They argue that federal income taxes could be abolished by switching to a progressive sales tax system that would be implemented nationwide.
National Rifle Association (NRA)
- The National Rifle Association is perhaps one of the most well-known nonpartisan organizations in the country, mainly because of its controversial stance on gun control as being protected under the Second Amendment of the Constitution.
- The topic of gun control is an easily heated one, and is often one of the most fervently discussed issues in political debates.
- The NRA was founded in 1871 and is one of the most well-supported nonpartisan organizations in the country, with a member base that spans all fifty of the states in the United States.
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)
- The NAACP, or the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, is another well known and established nonpartisan organization.
- The title of the organization speaks volumes about what the main goal of the organization is. Since 1909 the NAACP has fought to ensure that the rights of all people are protected by the United States government, and supports many African Americans in their college endeavors.
- The organization remains one of the most highly supported organizations of all of the nonpartisan groups in the country.
National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (NCHV)
- The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans is a nonpartisan organization that was founded in 1990 to fight for the veterans of foreign wars in any branch of the United States military. Their aim is to ensure that each veteran’s military benefits are granted upon the honorable discharge of the service person.
- NCHV is the liason between the Congress, the care providers and the executive branch agencies that focus on veteran issues.
- This organization also specializes in housing efforts around the country for veterans who have become displaced and who are without shelter.
Resources for the Future
- Resources for the Future is a nonpartisan organization that is funded by its supporters to conduct research and to involve itself with environmental and ecological issues throughout the United States.
- This organization was founded in 1952, and since then has become one of the most commonly referenced organizations in any environmental debates within government legislature.
So, now you know what some nonpartisan organizations in the United States are and you have a better idea of what these organizations are allowed (and not allowed) to do.
