What Are the Advantages of Socialism?
There are advantages and disadvantages to socialism. It is important to understand both sides of the picture in order to fully evaluate this form of government.
Socialism provides:
- Universal health care
- Interests of society at the heart of civilization
- Equality for all
- Everyone has a right to everything
Universal Health Care
Socialism provides for universal health care, which is a great help, especially for individuals who are struggling to pay for medical care. No one has to be turned away because they are unable to pay for the care that they need. With more people receiving the medical care they need, this then results in fewer preventable deaths, injuries, and diseases.
Interests of Society
Another aspect of socialism that some people find appealing is that it puts the best interests of society at the heart of its system. In cases of this type of government, the rulers want to ensure that society as a whole has its interests taken care of.
Of course, this idea leads us to more than one interesting question. Is society as a whole represented or is the majority represented? Is it possible to represent every single person? These are the types of questions that are frequently considered when evaluating the positives and negatives of socialism.
Equality for All
The idea of equality is another attractive component of socialism. No one is above one another, and everyone is considered to be equal. What that translates into is that there are no poor people and there are no social divides because there are no classes.
Although people under this type of government might be poor in contrast to other countries, it does not necessarily matter because, when evaluated against their fellow citizens, they are just the same as everyone else.
Right to Everything
Since everyone is equal, everyone has a share in everything. Therefore, situations such as universal health care are able to arrive.
Everyone has access to public education, to give another example. The lines between what is private and what is public are extremely blurred. In fact, we might even say that there is no line because there really is no "private." Therefore, you are entitled to all that the community has to offer.
Considerations of Socialism
Quite a great number of people have agreed through the years that socialism (and communism!) look good on paper; however, they never play out exactly that way in reality.
Yes, everyone has a right to everything, but there is limited privacy. Furthermore, the advantages about which we have spoken all seem to indicate that there is harmony amongst the people since they are all equal. However, that is not always the case. For example, religion is not permitted in a true Socialist society, so leaders begin to persecute those who do practice a religion.
