Poem Writing by Children

You might also be searching for some resources that will help your child to write his or her own Valentine's Day poem. Perhaps you are hosting a party for your son or daughter and all of your child's friends and want a craft to do, or maybe you are a teaching looking for a way to incorporate this holiday into your classroom agenda.

At least some of how you approach this task will depend upon the age of the child(ren); however, here are some basic tips:

  • Provide models for the children to read before they begin their own work. They might not understand what any poem - let alone a Valentine's Day poem - is supposed to look like.
  • Encourage them to choose a specific person in their family for whom they can write the Valentine's day poem. Doing so will help them customize the poem to a specific person.

When you are reading poems to your children - or presenting them for the child to read by him or herself, remind the child that the poems can be about all different types of love and love for different people in their lives.

Show them how the poem can express love for a mother, father, grandparent, and so forth. Doing so will help a little one to really be engaged and feel involved in the content of the poem.
