What Holidays Do Job Corps Centers Observe?

What holidays do Job Corps centers observe? Students accepted into the Job Corps are allowed one winter break and a summer break. Time off other than these holidays must be earned and students must be granted permission. This restriction includes weekends and other holidays throughout the year.

Students are not offered many opportunities to leave the Job Corps campus grounds throughout their training. These liberties must be earned through academic work, adherence to policies, and other types of actions while attending. However, students are entitled to the winter and summer holidays according to the student handbook.

Winter holiday includes ten non-training days, two federal holidays, and three weekends. Summer break includes the same ten non-training days, three weekends, and July 4th. Students do not observe any other holidays than these. Job Corps staff, on the other hand, observe many of the regular state and federal holidays.

About the Job Corps

The Job Corps, administered by the U.S. Government Department of Labor, provides free educational and vocational training to young people between the ages of 16 and 24.

Founded in 1964, and now with campuses across the country, the Job Corps have provided much needed educational opportunities for those who want to take advantage of the opportunity to study and gain employable skills for free.

Students learn skills to work in such fields as:

  • Automotive repair
  • Business
  • Construction
  • Finance
  • Healthcare
  • Hospitality
  • Information Technology
  • Machine repair
  • Manufacturing

Job Corps Learning Phases

Students accepted into Job Corps go through three learning phases:

  • A career preparation - This sixty day initiation helps students learn about workplace responsibility and investigates possible career paths to develop a long term plan.
  • A career development period - During this time, students learn the technical skills that they need in the work place and the academic skills to succeed in the classroom.
  • A career transition period - After successfully completing the academic portion, students then get their first job with continual support from the Job Corps as needed.

Applying to the Job Corps

Students wishing to attend Job Corps training should read the student handbook available online to understand the lifestyle requirements, rules, and regulations that this program requires. Although the training is free, this is not like attending college. Students are not free to come and go as they please; there are repercussions for not completing work and chores. Once students sign on with the Job Corps, they must follow all the rules and regulations contained in the handbook.

Students who apply and gain acceptance may be assigned to a center near them; however, they could be assigned to any center across the country that has an opening as well. Travel costs to and from the center are reimbursed. Due to the high number of applicants, students can have up to a six month wait before a spot becomes open.
