Why Did the Patriots Win the Revolutionary War?

The Revolutionary War was fought in order to eliminate British rule in the New World. Colonists became tired of the British rule, oppression, and taxation without representation. However, the fight to win their freedom from British rule was not an easy one for the colonists, as the colonists had no skilled or trained army to battle against the very formal British army. The Patriots who fought during this period of time and who ultimately won against the British only did so because of help that they received during this period of time from other nations.

Three of the biggest reasons the patriots won the Revolutionary War were:

  1. Because of the help of France
  2. Because of additional troops which were provided by France
  3. Because of help from Spain and other countries

French Help and the Revolutionary War

The Patriots needed France's help to win the Revolutionary War:

  • The country of France was supplying the American Patriot troops with supplies.
  • These supplies included guns, swords, and other types of weaponry.
  • Along with this weaponry, the French were also supplying the Patriot troops with ammunition.
  • These supplies were imported through the naval bases that existed throughout the eastern ports of the New World.

French Backup Troops and the Revolutionary War

France was also providing the colonists with additional troops.

  • The British troops outnumbered the Patriots, but with the help of France the odds were made a little bit more even.
  • The French troops were also more trained or skilled in the art of battle and helped the American Patriots by training them and passing along their knowledge of warfare.

Other Helpful Countries

The American Patriots were able to win their freedom from British rule through the help that was offered by other countries in addition to France.

  • Since Spain was a strong ally to the country of France, Spanish armies helped to clear out the British from areas in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.
  • This limited the British armies' paths of attack on the colonists in the New World.
  • The Netherlands helped in a roundabout way by interfering with the trading of the East Indian Company, which was the top trading company in Britain.
  • The Netherlands interfered so much with their trade that it ultimately affected the economy of Britain and caused great disruption.

As you can see, the American Patriots began to receive a great deal of help from other countries. These countries jumped in to help the New World because they were tired of the taxes on goods as well. This help that was delivered to the New World made the British pull back and rethink their position. With the help of these other countries, the patriots were able to win the Revolutionary War.
