- March 19, 2003 - The War in Iraq started.
- December 13, 2003 - Saddam Hussein is captured.
- February 3, 2004 - The CIA states that there was no threat from weapons of mass destruction before the 2003 Iraq war began.
- February 4, 2004 - Facebook, a social networking site, is launched.
- May 17, 2004 - Massachusetts is the first state to legalize same-sex marriage.
- December 26, 2004 - A devastating tsunami formed from a 9.3 earthquake in the Indian Ocean. 290,000 people die in one of the worst tragedies in history.
- July 24, 2005 - American Lance Armstrong sets a record by winning the Tour de France for the 7th straight time.
- August 29, 2005 - Hurricane Katrina makes landfall on the Gulf Coast. Over 1800 people die and $81 billion of damage occurred, making it the costliest disaster in history.
- February 22, 2006 - Apple iTunes downloaded its one millionth song.
- September 13, 2006 – The International Astronomical Union reclassified Pluto from a planet to a dwarf planet which left only eight planets in the solar system.
- January 4, 2007 - Democrat Nancy Pelosi becomes the first female Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.
- December 2007 - The recession officially begins.
- August 17, 2008 - US swimmer Michael Phelps wins his 8th Gold Medal at the Beijing Summer Olympic Games, breaking the old record of seven.
- September 2008 - The Stock Market crashes beginning a global financial crisis.
- October 3, 2008 - Emergency Economic Stabilization Act is enacted.
- November 4, 2008 - Barack Obama is elected the 44th president, the first African-American to become president.
- February 17, 2009 - American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 signed into law. The stimulus package was passed to create jobs and promote spending.
- October 31, 2009 - The economic recession worsens as jobless rates climb to 10%.
- January 12, 2010 - Three million are left homeless in Haiti because of a massive earthquake.

- April 20, 2010 - An explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico causes the worst oil spill in US history.
- May 20, 2010 - Craig Venter announced that a team of scientists has created the first self-replicating synthetic bacterial cell.
- August 31, 2010 - Troops are withdrawn from Iraq and Operation Iraqi Freedom ends.
