When did the Dravidians Move into the Indus River Valley?

Asking when did the Dravidians move into the Indus River Valley will give you a simple answer; however, it will also introduce you into the complex situation regarding the Dravidians and Aryans in the Indus River Valley.

The Dravidians are believed by historians and scholars to have come into the Indus River Valley around the year 3200 B.C. The Indus River Valley is now known as Pakistan, and the peoples lived around the banks of the Indus River, as the name implies. In fact, the cities that the Dravidian peoples created were quite elaborate. Harappa and Mohenjo-Dara, two major cities which archaeologists have found, had plumbing facilities inside the houses!

Conflict comes into play when we start talking about Dravidians and Aryans. Some historians believe that there was a raciallly charged invasion of the civilization around the year 1500 B.C. by the Aryans. However, others do not actually think that there was any difference between Dravidians and Aryans. Of course, this latter fact does not discount the idea of an invasion, it merely changes the way in which we view the cause of the situation.

Dravidians and Aryans

At this point, controversy still exists about these two ancient races. However, many scholars have come to believe the Dravidians and Aryans are actually not races, as people have believed throughout the years. The rising theory is that both of these groups of people were actually of the Caucasian race. You might be confused by this fact. Well, according to an article entitled "The Aryan-Dravidian Controversy" by David Frawley, "Caucasians can be of any color from pure white to almost pure black." Therefore, if Dravidians and Aryans are one in the same, we can say that they started living in the Indus River Valley in 3200 B.C., but another wave of them arrived in the area in 1500 B.C.
