When Was the Zuni Tribe First Found?

Throughout the United States there were multiple Indian tribes which inhabited the land. Some of these Indian tribes were massive, like the Sioux, who were split into many smaller separate well-known tribes. Another of these tribes was the Zuni Indians.

The Zuni appeared approximately 1,000 years prior to the first inhabiting Europeans. Little is known about these early Zuni since there were few recorded histories of the tribe or its interactions with others outside their tribe.

The tribes first known appearance in historical records was in 1580, where they were labeled as direct descendants of the Anasazi.

Where the Zuni Indians Were Found

The Zuni were a large tribe that inhabited a large amount of land. In addition they boasted many riches and were composed of a variety of different civilizations and cultures. The Zuni Indians were known as a peaceful tribe and, because of their ability to avoid conflict, they were able to avoid the changes going on around them and keep much of their land.

In fact, the Zuni Indian tribe has occupied the same location for many years. Originally, the tribe occupied a territory in Zuni, New Mexico- a small area that stretched from Arizona to New Mexico.

There are still present day Zuni Indians that live in this same area today.  However, in the many years since the Zunis were first found, the number within the tribe has diminished and they presently occupy a much smaller area than they once did, about the size of Rhode Island. This area is in New Mexico and the city in which most of them live in is named after them. Although some of the people live outside of this region, the numbers of Zuni that live outside of this area is few and far between.

Facts About the Zuni Tribe

Language

Like most Indian tribes, the Zuni people had and spoke their own language. Although there is not a specific name for the language of the people, linguists assert that it is their own. No other Indian tribe, either present of past, has spoken the same language as the Zuni people. However, their language is believed to have descended from the Pueblo Indian tribes.

Responsibilities of Men and Women

The Zuni believe that the women of their tribe are the life of their tribe. Therefore, the women are highly revered.

  • The women of the tribe are responsible for doing trading and keeping the finances in order.
  • Men are responsible for providing food and doing all the building work, but when the structures are completed, they belong to the women.

Spirituality

The Zuni are a very spiritual people. They are accustomed to holding celebrations and festivities that celebrate the spirit of the earth. For them, god resides in the lakes of Arizona and New Mexico.
