Where Was the Oglala Sioux Tribe Located?

The Oglala tribe had its location in the United States and, in fact, the United States was first inhabited by many native people. These native people, including the Oglala, lived along lakes, in the plains and all throughout the United States.

In 1806, the Oglala Sioux tribe was located between Cheyenne, Wyoming and the Bad rivers, in what would be present day South Dakota. In 1825, the tribe inhabited both banks of the Bad rivers from Missouri to the South Dakota Hills. At this point in time the tribe consisted of 1500 people with 300 of them being warriors of the tribe.

They were also extremely friendly with the whites as well as the surrounding tribes. By 1862, the Oglala tribe occupied an even bigger piece of territory. The tribe extended from the north and south forks of the Platte river and west of the Black Hills. They had reached as far as Cheyenne, Wyoming and ranged west to the Grand River.

Oglala Tribe Were Nomads

The Oglala tribe was part of the Sioux nation. The Sioux tribe consisted of about 20,000 people throughout seven different separate tribes that occupied different areas across the Great Plains.

In 1519, the Sioux, including the Oglala, were nomads of the plains and took advantage of the horses that were bought to the plains by the Spanish. The horse was also important to the tribe for traveling reasons because it allowed them to move their teepees freely.

While the Oglala were part of this Sioux nation and nomadic culture, most of the Oglala tribe were grouped together, so it is still possible to be even more specific about where the Oglala tribe was located.

Oglala Restlessness and Expansion

The Oglala tribe became known as one of the most hostile tribes of the Sioux and were known as one of the most restless tribes of Indians.

They occupied Fort Laramie. A battle ensued and, after a long battle, the Oglala finally gave up the occupation of Fort Laramie and compromised. They signed a treaty with the United States on July 25, 1825 and retreated to live at the mouth of the Bad rivers.

A treaty was also signed in South Dakota by the Oglala to end hostilities in this region as well with the people that were there.  Because of this treaty the location of the Oglala tribe changed once again.

They participated in the massacre of Lieutenant Grattan and the Lieutenant’s men in 1854. The Oglala tribe, along with some of the other tribes in the area, became known as the terror the Western frontier. The tribes became known for attacking trains of immigrants on rivers and across the plains. They attacked soldiers and were known for harassing forts and soldiers all across the plains.

Some of the most popular tribe leaders to lead these attacks were the infamous Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. In 1876, the Oglala Sioux tribe along with other tribes in the area were known for attacking prospectors who came to the Black hills region seeking gold. This is where Custer and his command were overthrown and destroyed by the Indian tribes.
