Maybe you have never collected coins before, but you are interested in getting started and want to know where a good starting point would be for yourself. In either case, we can give you some tips on which directions to head in.
Since you are asking for the best coins to invest in, we are assuming that you are looking for the types of coins that might make you more money one day than the amount of money which you spent to purchase them. Therefore, we are looking at "best coins" in terms of profit, not in terms of what your favorite colors, denominations of money, etc. are.
If you want to make some money on your coin collection, consider going after one of these following finds.
- Check out the yearly reports on how many coins were produced in a single year. For example, in 1804, the mint created 19,570 silver dollars. In that same year, 156,519 silver half dollars. To the best of anyone's knowledge, there are none of these silver half dollars circulating today. Therefore, if you can find one of those extremely rare pieces, you would be wise to invest in it! However, be cautious. There is a good chance that these coins have been destroyed or just do not exist anywhere, and you do not want to purchase a fake by mistake.
- Half cent coins are another great find. In the history of the United States, only about 8 million of them have been produced.
- Many people collect half dimes. If you want to make some money in the future, but do not want to spend too much right now, consider investing in a half dime that was produced between 1829 and 1873. They are still reasonably priced right now; however, as time goes on, they will eventually become more rare. If you want to splurge, go for a half dime produced between 1795 to 1805. They are more expensive because they are quite rare, although existent.
- Silver 3 cent coins are another collectible item. They are good to invest in because they are a coin that is no longer produced. However, they were not in production for about a decade during the latter part of the 19th century; therefore, a collection could not be continuous. In the future, these possibly will not have as much value as some other coins.
- At the current time, bust type half dollars minted between 1807 and 1836 are in high demand. Until only a few years ago, they could be purchased rather easily and at a decent cost. Now though, their prices are quickly rising. Try to find some of these quickly before they become unaffordable. You might be able to make a few dollars on them in a couple of years.
