How to Cash a Western Union Money Order

A money order from Western Union operates like a money order from any other location, such as a grocery store or bank, some places will cash them and others won't.

Follow these basic steps to cash a Western Union money order:

  • Find a place that will cash money orders. Your safest bet is obviously a bank, but if you don't have one or doing so isn't convenient, a check-cashing business will probably do it for a fee.
  • Next, ensure the place you've found will cash money orders from Western Union.  Money orders from Western Union aren't any riskier or different than any other, some places just accept certain types of money orders, as opposed to others.
  • In the vast majority of cases, a valid money order of any kind, including a Western Union money order, can be cashed at your bank or at a check-cashing location. Your local Western Union office is also an excellent place to ask.

Once you've found a place to cash it, simply present the money order and your ID. The money order will be verified as legitimate and you'll be able to cash the money order and take the funds.
