What Are Branding Classes in Business Schools?

Those who are entering school to get their MBAs or those who are curious about marketing may wonder, what are branding classes in business school?  The study of branding is a common subject in marketing schools and other types of majors and career tracks related to business operation but not everyone knows what branding is or what is taught in branding classes.

Branding, as a concept, is defined by the American Marketing Association as the name, symbol, or sign (or combination thereof) that identifies a particular company or its products or services to customers.

  • The study of branding is not only about how to create a brand, but how to do so and then market it to the public in a way that presents a cohesive, persuasive and appealing image.
  • Branding classes walk students through the basics of brand development, which include everything from how to ensure the customer knows what is being sold to them (clarity within the brand), to how to ensure they'll buy again (customer loyalty).
  • The strategy and science of branding takes place on all levels of marketing and advertisement, as well as in all forums. New products, classic products, online advertising, and television commercials are all being marketed carefully under the guidance of those who know how they want to project the brand, and who are attempting to do so by the choices they make in providing information to the public – who are also, of course, their potential customers.

Branding classes, therefore, are very important in business school. They help students who are going to enter into the business world learn about how a product is given its own personality. This is useful not just to students who intend to do marketing, but also for those who will be involved in any type of sales, customer service or product development.
