What Kinds of Jobs Are in the Medical Field?

When it comes to working in the field of medicine, many people may find themselves asking what kinds of jobs are in the medical field? There are numerous jobs that are available within the medical field. The most popular jobs would be that of a doctor and a nurse. There so many medical related jobs that it might just be too many to list. For example a phlebotomist is the technician that would draw your blood at certain diagnostic centers. An x-ray technician specializes in taking and developing x-rays.

It is important to note that not all medical personnel may work exclusively caring for patients. Medical personnel such as medical billers, coders, and other administrative personnel within the medical field are also considered medical personnel. Other positions that are considered as being a part of the medical field include: pharmacists, pharmaceutical sales representatives, practice managers, physical therapists and a host of others positions as well.

Kinds of Jobs In the Medical Field

Let’s say that you were interested in being a nurse - you would need to know that a nurse in the medical field is quite possibly one of the highest paid, in demand jobs that you could possibly get. There is an ever-growing need for nurses both in a hospital setting and in a home healthcare setting as well. A nurse has a number of duties depending on what area she practices in, but nurses are typically in charge of checking vital signs, drawing blood, administering medication and otherwise assisting physicians.

Medical doctors of physicians are always in demand as well. They are the ones  who do all of the examining, assessing and diagnosing. With several years of school and working in a hospital environment under their belts, medical doctors are more than equipped to do their jobs effectively.

Alternative Medicine

Recently the medical community has also begun to recognize specialists within alternative medical fields as having a role in the medical community. Positions as chiropractors, occupational therapist, physical therapists, as well as speech and language pathologists fall under this category of alternative medical professionals. In this respect, the amount of education needed for these alternative medical practitioners will vary according to their specialty. 

Administrative Jobs

The administrative side of the medical field also are considered as being a part of and playing a major role in the medical field. Positions may include:

  • Medical Service Managers
  • Medical Transcriptionists
  • Medical Records and Health Information Technicians

There are also many more jobs within the medical field that have not been mentioned. It is fair to say that anyone who works in either a hospital, medical center or medical office is considered to play an integral role in the medical field.

Education and Jobs in the Medical Field

The level of education you have can have a major effect on what kinds of jobs are available to you in the medical field. Most professionals in the medical field are graduates of colleges and universities. The medical field requires that many of its personnel have degrees from accredited schools.

Most of the technicians, whether at a clinic or in a medical center, are also fully certified and many even have a degree or, at the very least, a certificate of completion.

All nurses whether a LPN (licensed professional nurse), RN (registered nurse), or CRNP (certified registered nurse practitioner) have to be certified usually through a Bachelor’s degree or, in some cases, a certification program. This will require that the individual enroll in a four-year college or university in order to become a degreed (certified) nurse.

If you are interested in securing a position within the medical field you should first determine what your skill set is. You need to have a clear idea of what you intend to do work-wise. How will you put your degree to good use? Are you sure that you would like to work in the medical field? Once you have a clear answer to all of the above-mentioned questions you will be well on your way to getting where you need to be in the medical field.
