How to Strengthen the Knees

Many an athlete or person having pain has asked how to strengthen the knees.  Whenever you begin a workout regimen, or if you start having trouble with your knees and begin to see how weak they are, you will realize very quickly how important it is to keep your knees strong. If your knees have become weak due to inactivity or injury, your best bet in avoiding serious problems with them is to not only make sure your knees are strong, but to strengthen your legs as well.

There are a few key things to keep in mind when learning how to strengthen the knees:

  • The supporting muscles around your knees are connected to the muscles that run the length of your legs. By strengthening them, you will also strengthen the muscles that support your knee cap and the ligaments in the back of your knees.
  • Stretching your legs properly at least twice a day is an important step in strengthening your knees. Daily stretching keeps the circulation in your legs flowing strong, which helps maintain muscle elasticity and strength.
  • Developing lower body strength through stretches that work that area specifically to develop lower leg muscle tone that will help you to support your knees as you move about in your everyday functions.
  • Making sure that your feet are properly aligned with your knees through the use of orthotics can also greatly increase the strength of your knees as well. 

So, now you have some basic tips for how to strengthen the knees. if you are concerned about your lack of knee strength, you may wish to consult with a personal trainer to guide you through some exercises that are tailored to you. If your knees are weak because of a specific injury, however, a physical therapist may actually be the best bet for you.
