What Are Gout Causing Foods?

List of Gout Causing Foods

The following foods have been identified with causing or aggravating a gout condition. Foods High in Fat and Cholesterol

Interestingly, it seems that foods that are high in both of these substances tend to be problematic in several areas of health. Therefore, even if you are not at risk for gout, you might want to consider lowering your intake of these foods.

Purine is a substance found in different foods that increases uric acid in the body. Too much uric acid is a main reason why gout happens; therefore, you want to decrease your intake of foods with a lot of purine. It seems that a lot of foods that are high in purines are also high in fat and cholesterol. In fact, the first 15 items on our list fall into this category.

You will probably notice that you are going to be losing a lot of protein if you stop eating all of those foods. That is a major reason why you need to consult with your doctor. He or she can recommend lean meat alternatives, or suggest serving size guidelines for you to follow in order to avoid complications.

Dairy

As you will probably notice from the list, a lot of dairy products tend to aggravate gout symptoms. Once again, these foods - along with basically all of the other ones on the list - contain high levels of purine. Therefore, if you are going to consume dairy products, you should stay away from full fat or whole ones. Look for low fat or no fat options. You might even want to consider trying out some soy products.

Other Foods

We have some vegetables on this list as well. That does not mean that you should stop eating vegetables since they are healthy for you. You just need to eat ones that are not high in purine.

Typically, a dark green vegetable has a higher purine content than a litter green vegetable. Be sure to work with your doctor or a nutritionist to determine which vegetables you should restrict from your diet.

Gout-Friendly Foods

As we have suggested, you want to work out a dietary plan with your doctor. However, consuming the following foods and drinks should be safe for your condition:
