What Causes Hearing Loss and Nerve Damage?

There is not just one cause of hearing loss or nerve damage. If you are experiencing any hearing loss or you suspect you may have nerve damage, the best thing to do is to visit your physician and have a proper diagnosis. However, here are some general things that can cause hearing loss and nerve damage in many cases.

According to Web MD, one of the most common causes of hearing loss, is actually a quite treatable condition - ear wax.

  • The buildup of the thick wax that can accumulate in the outer ear can actually block off the entirety of the ear canal.
  • This can cause a blockage that prevents any vibration of the eardrum.
  • When this occurs, the ability to hear anything in the blocked ear is prevented as well since you need those vibrations to create and transmit sound.
  • Fortunately, if this is the problem that is causing your hearing loss, a visit to an ear, nose, and throat specialist or a general practitioner can likely solve your problem. The wax can be removed with a fluid flush or a specialized tool for the removal of the wax without damage to the outer or inner ear canal.

Medical Conditions Causing Hearing Loss

According to additional information posted within the Web MD database, there are also a number of additional problems that can cause hearing loss as well. While many people think that listening to repeated loud noises is one of the most common causes of hearing loss (remember your mom telling you to "Turn it down, you'll go deaf,) there are actually other causes of hearing loss that are far more prevalent:

  • Outside of earwax or blockage, various types of infections are the most common causes of the loss of hearing.
  • Syphilis, lyme disease, cytomegalo virus, and even different herpes infections can cause the loss of hearing.
  • Though repairable in some cases, the loss may also be permanent without prompt and proper treatment.

What Causes Nerve Damage

According to Wrong Diagnosis, there are two different ailments that commonly cause different stages of nerve damage. These ailments affect over 10 million people in America alone.

  • The first major cause of nerve damages is diabetes.
  • The second is physical trauma.

There are a number of other causes for nerve damage that affect many people as well, but the two mentioned previously are the most prevalent in Americans.

Other Causes of Nerve Damage

Some of the other ailments that can lead to nerve damage include:

  • Carcinoma
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • SLN, or Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

These three conditions affect millions of people, and have reportedly caused nerve damage in over one million people in the United States.

  • HIV and the AIDS virus, as well as multiple sclerosis affect over 200,000 people in the United States, according to the wrongdiagnosis.com website.
  • Lyme disease, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma also affect people by damaging their nerve endings, but these numbers have yet to reach 200,000 people.

Be sure to visit your physician if you are experiencing any hearing loss or other medical problems as information found on the Internet likely will not provide you with a reliable diagnosis that reflects your particular medical situation.
