One of the most popular inquiries regarding world records is the question of who was the tallest man that ever lived.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Robert Pershing Wadlow, born on February 22, 1918, was the tallest man who ever lived. There have been other stories of men claiming to be taller than he was; however, he is the tallest man for whom there is irrefutable evidence. Additionally, he is also the tallest person who ever lived, since no man or woman ever reached his great height.
Wadlow reached the incredible height of 8 feet 11.1 inches. At the time of his death, he weighted 485 pounds. He had hypertrophy of the pituitary gland, which was the reason that he grew to such epic proportions. At the time of his death, there was no evidence that he was going to stop growing. In fact, in the last year of his life, he had grown over one and a half inches. He was brought up in Alton, Illinois, earning him the nicknames of the Alton Giant and the Giant of Illinois.
When he was born, he was of an average height. However, by the age of four, he was 5 foot 4 inches tall. By 8, he was over 6 feet tall, and by 13, he was over 7 feet tall.
Often, when people are of extreme heights, they can have problems with their legs. Wadlow wore a leg brace, which caused a blister to form. This blister turned into an infection. He was receiving treatment from doctors; however, his condition worsened.
On July 15, 1940, he died in his sleep. He was only 22 years old at the time of his passing.
