• The first time the trench was explored was during the Challenger expedition, which lasted from December of 1872 to May of 1876. On that journey, they only recorded depths of 26,850 feet. For a voyage that occurred before modern technological developments, that is really not that bad of a measurement. However, clearly it was still quite inaccurate.
• About two decades later in 1899, the USS Nero got a decent amount closer to the actual depth of the Mariana Sea Trench. They recorded a depth of 31,614 feet. They still were not 100 percent there, but they were on their way to discovering the depths that we know are true today.
• When the Challenger II went out in the 1930s, it went out equipped with echo technology. This technology allowed the depths to be measured at 35,760 feet, which is incredibly close to the measurements that we now know are true.
• The Soviet vessel named Vityaz found a depth of 36,200 feet in 1957.

You will find the Mariana sea trench in the Pacific Ocean, located nearby the 14 Mariana Islands. The country that is very close to the Mariana Sea Trench is Japan.

The Mariana sea trench is not the only one of its type in the Pacific Ocean. Of course, it is certainly the deepest but it also is certainly not alone. At least 22 sea trenches have been found, and 18 of them are located in the Pacific Ocean. An interesting research topic would be to figure out why so many of them are concentrated in this one ocean. Three of the others are in the Atlantic Ocean and one of them is in the Indian Ocean.
