How Many Ounces in a Liter?

Often it becomes important to know how many ounces are in a liter.  There are approximately 33.5 fluid ounces in one liter.

We now know that the answer to how many ounces are in a liter is that there are around 33.5 fluid ounces in a liter. But, why is there a different system of measurement used and why do we need to convert from ounces to liters?

  • The reason for the difference in the measurement types, as well as the fractional results between liters and ounces, is that ounces are part of the English or Standard measurement system, a measurement system that was in use for many hundreds of years in Europe and America.
  • The problem with English or Standard measurement is that the conversions between units are not intuitive, and often require a fair amount of knowledge of the various units, or a conversion chart that must be consulted.

Liters and the Metric System

Liters, on the other hand, are part of the metric system.

  • The metric system has been adopted through most of Europe and the rest of the world, with the exception of America and Australia.
  • The metric system is a simpler form of measurement because each increasing step goes up by a factor of ten, making conversion tables obsolete and making conversion between units simple with a decimal place movement.
  • For example, a milliliter is one thousandth of a liter, a deciliter is one tenth of a liter, etc.

This is why the difference between the conversions of ounces to liters and English to Metric exists.
