How Many Quarts in a Gallon?

How many quarts in a gallon? The answer to this question is that there are 4 quarts in a US gallon. Let's learn a little more about quarts, gallon and units of measure.

So, we know now that the answer to how many quarts in a gallon is that there are four quarts in a US gallon.  But, how much liquid is this?

  • A US quart consists of 32 fluid ounces of liquid.
  • This means that a US gallon contains 128 fluid ounces of liquid.

Why is the Term US Gallon Used?

You may notice that the answer to the question of how many quarts there are in a gallon refers to US gallons. Why is that the case?

  • The term US gallon is used because there are also European, or Imperial, gallons, which are different from the United States definition of a gallon of liquid.
  • These measurements are part of the English or Standard measuring system, which was in use in the United States and Europe for hundreds of years.
  • Other parts of Europe and most of the rest of the world now use the metric system, which measures liquid in liters, as opposed to gallons.
  • However, Australia and the United States still use gallons as a standard of liquid measurement.

Using Different Liquid Measurements

There are subdivisions of liquid measurement smaller than quarts.  For example, pints, cups, half pints, and other smaller measurements exist.  However, it is most common to find items sold in quarts or larger containers.

Gasoline, for example, is dispensed by the gallon, and many places sell milk and water in gallon containers.  It is generally rare to see smaller measurements of fluids, except in single serving containers such as a pint of orange juice or a quart of milk.
