What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Nuclear Power?

When we are talking about such a crucial subject, it is very important to understand what are the advantages and disadvantages of nuclear power. You might immediately think of nuclear war and you should realize its dangers; however, you will also learn that nuclear energy is a major source of power for other purposes.

Energy

Nuclear power is a major source of energy. We probably do not have to tell you about how important energy is or what its various uses are! Every time that you turn on a light, watch television, or go for a drive, you use energy.

France generates 78% percent of its energy through nuclear reactors, demonstrating how important it can be as an energy source. Furthermore, you have probably heard people saying how we are using up a lot of our natural sources of energy such as coal and fossil fuel. What will be the alternatives when those resources are all used up?

Costs

When we talk about the costs in terms of nuclear power, we are speaking both in terms of finances and in terms of the environment. In order to use nuclear energy, the operating costs are quite low. Furthermore, for nations using nuclear energy, they do not have to spend money to purchase expensive sources of energy from other countries. Countries who are already in debt or have financial struggles could benefit from such a program.

We spoke earlier about how using this type of energy prevents us from having to destroy other types of energy, which are already in short supply. In addition, we many of these fossil fuels are rather harmful for the environment. Using nuclear power presents an alternative to that situation.

Disadvantages of Nuclear Power

Nuclear Weapon and War

Of course, the major problem with nuclear power is that it gives people the ability to create nuclear weapons. Nuclear power is used for massive projects, and it has not yet been used for smaller projects such as cars. Therefore, when nuclear power is used, it is used in large quantities.

Giving people the power to build nuclear weapons only increases the opportunities for a nuclear war to start.

Safety Concerns

A number of safety issues come into play when we are talking about this issue. While other environmental dangers are diminished, new ones arise. Nuclear energy pollutes the environment, especially if it is not disposed of properly. There are problems with figuring out how to dispose of it, only further heightening these sorts of issues.

Working in these types of nuclear power plants is much more dangerous than working in another sort of energy plant. Explosions in these types of facilities cause much death and destruction. Having these types of establishments leaves the areas vulnerable to attacks as well.

Furthermore, on a day to day basis, working in a nuclear power plant can be dangerous for the health of the workers there. Working in these types of plants has been connected to cancer and to high levels of radiation within the body.

We have looked at both the advantages and the disadvantages of nuclear power. Think about the different issues, and decide which components are the most important to you in order to come to a decision of your own.
