What Are Basic Skateboard Tricks?

What are basic skateboard tricks? This question is asked often as skateboarding is popular with many children, teens, and adults. Although you may be wobbly at first, it generally does not take long to learn how to manipulate and maneuver a skateboard. Once you find out how to do this, you will be aching to learn some of the tricks that the pros use. However, you should probably start out with some simple basic tricks first.

Below is a list of some of the most basic and popular skateboarding tricks and explanations as to how to perform them.

Ollie

The ollie is a classic example of a basic skateboard trick. In fact, the Ollie is probably one of the oldest and basic skateboarding tricks to learn.  Here are instructions for how to do it:

  • It is performed by having the skater pop the skateboard up into the air.
  • When done right, it should look like the skateboarder is on the board the whole time it is in the air.
  • To perform the trick, you simply snap back on the tail of the skateboard and pushing it towards the ground.
  • This puts the front of the skateboard into the air.
  • The front of the skateboard is them twirled around while the rider hops over it.

Kickturns

Kickturns are another example of a basic skateboard trick:

  • The kickturn is performed by the rider leaning back and supporting all of his or her weight on the back wheels.
  • This allows the front of the skateboard to pull up and then the rider can decide in which direction to point in.
  • Although this move does not seem difficult, it is actually much harder than it looks to do it correctly.

50-50 Grind

The 50-50 grind, another of the basic skateboard tricks, is performed when a rail is ridden.

  • Now more commonly called the truck stand, this maneuver is performed when a rider ollies the skateboard onto a hand railing or something else similar in nature and rides along the rail.
  • They do this by keeping the skateboard gliding over the length of the rail on its two trucks, which is why the maneuver is more modernly known as the truck stand.

Rock N Rolls

  • A rock and roll is performed when a skater rides up a ramp and then back down again.
  • If the rock and roll is done with the rider facing the opposite direction he is normally travelling, this is known as a rock and roll to a fakie.
  • If the rider goes up the ramp and then puts the front of the board over the lip of the ramp and performs a 180 degree turn and then rides back down the ramp in their normal position, this is known as a true rock and roll.
  • This type of trick is popular at skate parks because it is fairly simple to learn and ramps are available for use.

So, now you have a list of basic skateboard tricks and you can hit your board and practice them. You'll be an expert in no time.
