Who Invented the Sport Fencing?

Who invented the sport fencing? In reality, we don't have one clear answer to this question because the sport was invented so very long ago.

The sport of fencing as we know it today has one of the most storied pasts of any modern sport, because historical records show that the sword- the main weapon used in the sport of fencing- dates back to biblical-era weaponry.

However, while swords were used, there is no evidence to suggest that any biblical figures invented the sport fencing. Instead, the modern sport of fencing began to be developed around the year 1510.

The invention of the sport fencing is largely credited to Cordouan Gonzalo, although there have been records uncovered of dueling schools forming throughout Europe, from Germany to France, and throughout Italy dating back to as early as the beginning of the 14th century. These schools, or clubs, were largely responsible for the advancements that were soon made in both weaponry and armor, allowing duelers to move more fluidly.

There are also records of organized sword duels that date back as far as the Greek and Roman empires, however these fights were much more crude in nature, with the end result typically being the death of the loser. Still, an argument could be made that the preliminary beginnings of the invention of the sport of fencing can date back to this time.

Part of why it is so hard to define who invented fencing is that, throughout the course of history, as different tools of war were introduced to battle lines, they were also introduced in one-on-one sword battles. Today, the sport of fencing is much more refined, a gentleman’s sport of sorts, with rules of engagement that have regulated the sport and made it one representing prestige and honor.
