Which Olympic Sports Does Mexico Not Have?

If anyone were to ask you, “Which Olympic sports does Mexico not have?” you need to look first to the winter Olympics. While Mexico has a team for many of the summer Olympic games, the only Olympic team that has ever represented Mexico in the winter games consists of one man--- an alpine skier who goes by the name Prince Hubertus von Hohenlohe. The Mexican Olympic Committee also had a bobsled team assembled, however the team failed to qualify, and the ice hockey team that was to represent Mexico was beat out by Spain for a place in the 2010 Winter Olympics (even though Mexico beat Spain in their first encounter.)  Thus, Mexico does not have several of the Olympic sports.

The following is a list of olympic sports for which Mexico does not have a team:

Gymnastics

The summer Olympic gymnastics tournament is an extremely fierce competition in which individuals and teams compete in a number of gymnastics exercises including:

  • Floor exercises
  • Balance beam
  • Uneven bars
  • Vault

Mexico does not have a team to participate in this olympic sport because gymnastics are not traditionally practiced in Mexico. There aren’t many people in the country who can afford the training it takes to become an Olympic gymnast, much less afford the travel expenses which would be required of the Mexican Olympic Committee.

Luge

The luge is the winter sport in which a rider sits atop a sled and runs through a course which is very similar to a bobsled run. The racers from each country race each other’s finishing times, making each turn crucial to the race. Mexico has never had a team to register for luge events because of the fact that training facilities for luge races are hard to come by. In fact, while the luge is widely popular, even the United States has only three tracks which can be practiced on all year around. Since Mexico doesn’t have the proper training facilities, it cannot justify sponsoring a team for the Olympic winter games.

Speed Skating

Speed skating, among many other ice sports performed at the winter games, is popular because of the skill required to perform at the Olympic level. Racers wear specialized skates, and race as hard as they can around a glass-smooth oval ice track for a distance between ½ mile and 1 ½ mile. Racers race both each other and each other’s finish times in order to obtain medals for the sport.

Mexico doesn’t boast an Olympic team for this sport because the country simply cannot afford to provide a facility with an adequate training environment for many of the winter games. Not only that, but in sports such as these, the athletes would have to pay for the travel needed for training themselves, which would be very difficult for the majority of Mexico’s population.

Biathlon

The biathlon is a combination of both cross-country skiing and shooting, set in race form as a sort of marathon of both endurance and wits. Racers ski cross-country while carrying with them a shooting rifle, and at certain intervals through the race, they must stop skiing and fire five rounds at a target with the rifle. If the target is hit all five times, the racer receives no time added to his or her race time, but if the racer misses the target, he or she may be penalized in seconds added to the finishing time of the race.

Mexico, as a country, does not have a training facility or an environment that is either large enough for or conducive to the type of training necessary to compete in this sport at an Olympic level. Athletes choosing to train for this sport would also have to fund any travel themselves, and there is still a slim chance that the Mexican Olympic Committee will register an athlete for the event if there is only one racer the attend the event.

Lack of Funding for Olympic Sports

So you see, most of the reasons for Mexico not participating in some Olympic sports are due to the fact that, even if the country did have enough talented athletes to participate in these events, the country lacks the necessary funding to train or register these athletes in the Olympic sports registrations.
