Who Has Won the Most NCAA Basketball Women Championships?

People who are new to women's basketball and trying to learn about the history of the sport should want to research who has won the most NCAA basketball women championships.

Ladies college basketball teams across the nation all vie for a chance to participate in the NCAA Women's Championship. However, one team has made it to the championships for 69% of all championships played, and that team has the most wins ever. The women's basketball team from the University of Tennessee proudly claims that title.

The University of Tennessee team has won the championship eight times, which occurred in the following years:

  • 1987
  • 1989
  • 1991
  • 1996
  • 1997
  • 1998
  • 2007
  • 2008

Clearly, a great deal of their success occurred in the later part of the 1990s, but they have been winning more frequently again as of late.

Other NCAA Women's Champions

A few other teams in this league have won the NCAA women's championships at least once or even multiple times as well.  The team with the second most wins is not far behind Tennessee, so perhaps one day they will wind up surpassing them. The list below will tell you their names, along with the amount of times they have won the championship.

  • UConn-six
  • Louisiana Tech-two

  • Old Dominion-one
  • Baylor-one
  • Maryland-one
  • Notre Dame-one
