Why Are Sports Bras Good for Women's Health?

Why are sports bras good for women's health? Sports bras are not just designed for comfort alone – they are also essential for a woman’s health, since they provide much-needed support that helps to keep the body in alignment and that helps to prevent stress on various muscles and joints. Sports bras support a woman's breasts and result in less strain on her body while she is being active and engaging in sports.

Regardless of her cup size, every woman needs a certain amount of support while performing sports; not having proper support means that there is extra stress put on her back during various activities. Even low-impact exercises, done without the support of a sports bra, can result in strain on the upper back and shoulders that results in pain, if not longer-term injuries that may develop over time. This is especially true if a woman has a larger chest, which can cause more stress on the back.

Sports Bras and Posture

Sports bras affect a woman’s posture. As any woman will tell you, doing sports without the support of the correct bra can lead to slouching in an effort to protect herself and prevent painful bouncing.

The slouch, in turn, throws her back and hips out of alignment, and puts her in the position for damage to various muscles and extreme discomfort. This adds to the discomfort on the back from the breasts that aren't properly supported. If this type of situation is repeated over time, the damage can be quite painful and can lead to injuries.

Wearing a Sports Bra

Wearing a sports bra, for some women, can be considered uncomfortable. Sports bras are designed to be much more supportive and, in a way, confining than regular bras. They are made of tight stretchable material and have wide straps, and a single swatch of fabric across the front with built-in cups, instead of the separate cups of a typical bra.

All of this can certainly feel restricting, but if the bra is literally uncomfortable, the problem is not the wearing of a sports bra itself, but the choice of bra.

Today’s sports bras come in so many styles and shapes that finding the right one is a matter of trying multiple types. You should also get help from a sales person to make sure you have the right fit so that the sports bra can provide you with the maximum health benefit.

Sports Bras for Various Sizes of Chests

Women with smaller cup sizes may very well need less support than those who wear larger sizes; typically a C cup is considered the cut-off between “small” and “large” cups, and anyone under a C cup will likely find herself worrying less about the support of her bra. This doesn’t mean she shouldn’t wear one, but rather that she can likely get away with wearing a simpler one with less built-in support.

Larger cup sizes, as with typical bras, require more engineering to provide the correct amount of support. Padding is also an important factor for comfort, regardless of cup size.

If your sports bra feels uncomfortable, don’t give up on wearing one altogether: it’s there to protect you. Just keep trying until you find one that suits you. In the long run, you’ll be glad you did. Sports bras are good for women's health.
