What Is a Kindle?

What is a Kindle? A Kindle is a digital reading device that was developed by the Internet merchandising website Amazon.com. Amazon.com also developed all of the proprietary software necessary for the use of the Kindle.

The simplest way to describe a Kindle is as an ebook reader. However, there are many features to consider and understand about what a Kindle is and does:

  • The Kindle is a tool used for readers to buy and store digital books and magazines from the Internet so that they may be retrieved at a later date and read on the screen that the Kindle unit is equipped with.
  • Kindle units have their own storage capacities, which allow users to store digital libraries within the unit itself. This negates the need for external storage units for the storage of books or digital material.
  • The built-in storage on the Kindle means more than one book can be accessed and read without having to access the Internet or load a book’s file format into the unit.
  • Once the initial product download occurs, the user is able to access the file at any time he or she wishes.

Kindle's Wi-Fi Compatibility for Downloading

The Kindle unit is regularly upgraded as well in order to keep up with current technology. In fact, Kindles make use of cutting-edge computer technology to allow readers instant access to reading material for purchase:

  • Kindle units are wi-fi compatible, meaning they are able to access the Internet without being connected to an Internet-ready device.
  • The unit is able to connect anywhere that it can get a signal from Amazon.com's WhisperNet network, which is almost anywhere. You don't have to be located in an area which provides a wi-fi signal or where there is a wireless Internet connection present in order to download files directly from the Internet.  You also do not pay for the connection service, which allows you to buy books, and even check Wikipedia.
  • Once connected, the Kindle unit is able to access Amazon.com and the user is able to purchase or download free material directly to the unit through the connection.

Saving and Accessing Files on the Kindle

Downloaded files or files created on your computer can also be saved in the Kindle unit, as the unit is equipped with software programming that allows for the creation of typed files to be stored.

  • A user is able to write using the Kindle unit’s keyboard and programming, and save his or her progress directly to the Kindle unit.
  • Individuals can also email or send files right to their Kindle. There is a small fee charged for sending documents wirelessly from your computer to your Kindle, but you can also transfer these documents for free from the computer directly to the Kindle using the included cable.

So, all in all, when asking what the Kindle is, the answer is that it is an exciting piece of technology that allows you to take your entire library anywhere, so you can access and read your books at any time.
