What Is the Most that will Fit on a DVD?

What is the most that will fit on a DVD is an important question. Whenever you use a DVD-ROM to store any kind of information, such as a movie file, picture files, or any other type of media or data, you are limited by the amount of space that the DVD is capable of holding. This means that some movie files (especially long movie files) or picture folders (especially those that have large, high-resolution images on them or that have an extensive number of pictures on them) may require the use of two DVD discs. Of course, this depends on what file format and the size capacity of the DVD you use.

Knowing how much will fit on a DVD is going to vary depending on what DVD format you are using:

  • Standard DVD-R and DVD –R/W discs usually hold anywhere from 4 to 4.7 GB of data per single-layered disc. These discs are referred to as “DVD-5” formatted.
  • With the advancements that media technology has made, however, there are also DVD discs that are designed to hold almost twice the information as a DVD-5 disc.
  • These larger capacity discs are able to hold more because they utilize a layering system that allows the disc reader to read the top layer first, and then the bottom layer once the top one has run out of space.
  • These layered discs are referred to as DVD-9 formatted, and they usually have a maximum holding space of 8.5 GB.
  • There are also two-sided DVD discs that hold up to 4.7 GB per side.

So, if you are concerned about what the most amount of data is that will fit on your DVD, check the package to find out what kind of DVD it is. There should also be a description on your DVD's package somewhere indicating how many gigabites of data it can hold.
