What Country Has the Most Active Readers?

Determining which country has the most active readers is somewhat difficult depending on your definition of “active.” Some examples of countries that may be the answer include Iceland, the UK, Finland, North and South Korea and Canada.

There are many studies done and statistics gathered from various countries concerning reading education in schools, who reads for enjoyment, how many newspapers are read by the public each day, and any number of other telling facts.

Based on this type of information, general consensus seems to be that the countries ranked near the top of the charts for active readers include:

  • Iceland
  • United Kingdom
  • Finland
  • North and South Korea
  • Canada

These are just a sampling of the top countries, but they tend to appear on the top of every chart, from literacy rates to performance of international student assessments in reading. They also sell large numbers of books and newspapers to their citizens each year.

Therefore, while there is no specific survey or statistics on the number of active readers, it stands to reason that these countries are likely those with the people who read most often and most actively.

Defining an Active Reader

When deciding which country has the most active readers, you need to begin by determining what you mean by active.  Active could mean any number of things:

  • Which country has people who read most often
  • Which country has people who read most effectively

The answer to either of these questions is somewhat difficult to come by. However, that doesn't mean there is no information to determine where the most active readers live. The answer just might be phrased in a statistic that reflects something slightly different than "active" readers.

Interests of Active Readers

Reading is often a sign of education, awareness of current events, interest in the world, and the benefit of information.

Citizens of countries that are shown to read a great deal tend to be better off in various capacities than those from countries who don't read. Everything, from their relations with the rest of the world to the success and happiness of their citizens, may be improved.

  • Icelandic citizens are shown to read the most books per capita than any other nation in the world according to Grapevine.Is. Iceland also has more artists in the workforce – meaning, more people doing what they love as a career – than any other country, and they have minuscule rates of citizens who describe themselves as unhappy.
  • Finland is another example of how increased numbers of readers within the country lead to success in other areas. Various studies done in 2006 found that more than 500,000 citizens participate in education and training that is devoted to their leisure time and hobbies. In other words, they devote time and energy to doing what they love.

These are just some examples. The consensus is that the more active the readers within any particular country, the more content and successful its citizens. These are interesting facts to consider for anyone who may debate the relevance of education.

So, now you know more about which country has the most active readers as well as some details about how being an active reader may help people to live happy lives.
