What Is Aborigines Culture Like?

You may have heard of Aboriginal peoples, but do you know what is Aborigines culture like? Studying the culture of these peoples will transport you back in time to an extremely different way of life than the life to which you are accustomed.

Australia is home to many different Aboriginal cultures. Of course, many other different parts of the world are as well, but when we refer to the "Aborigines," we generally mean those from Australia.

There are literally scores and scores of different types of Aboriginal culture. Many of them share some common traits in their religion and lifestyle, so it is possible to have a general overview of what Aboriginal culture is like.

Religion

At the heart of the Aboriginal culture, you will find religion. It is the basis of many of their days and their reason for being. They are very religious and spiritual people.

They are polytheistic, meaning that the believe in multiple gods and goddesses. Each group believes in different gods and goddesses, and they have images of them in some form or another. They generally will pray to these images that they create. They look towards these deities for the explanation of creation and how man came to live as they do today.

Ceremonies

Intrinsically tied to the idea of religion are the ceremonies of the Aborigines. Some of the rituals that they perform are along the lines of prayers for rain, food, or some other sort of need. They are asking for divine intervention.

Extensive rituals surround the initiation rites of girls and boys into adulthood, and the passage of a human life from this world into the afterlife. Great preparations are made to ensure that the spirits can return to where they came from and either experience an afterlife or be reborn into this Earth.

Art

It is hard to find a part of Aboriginal culture that does not tie back into religion, since it is such a key component of these humans lives. Therefore, their art reflects both religion and ceremonies quite frequently. Sometimes, they will employ a naturalistic style, which means that any person looking at the artwork will be able to determine what it is. However, they also often use a non-naturalistic style, where the artwork will have a specific meaning that cannot necessarily be conveyed to the general public.

Homes

One of the major differences amongst Aboriginal cultures is the types of homes in which they live. If they are in a warmer part of Australia, their houses are going to be quite different than if they are in a colder part. Of course, Australia is generally quite moderate, but each land mass usually has some places that are colder at certain times of the year than others.

Houses are usually quite simple, whatever the case may be. They use the natural elements that are around them, such as stones, sticks, barks, and so forth to create their dwelling places. Sometimes they will use leaves as a covering for the house.

Research Factors to Consider

As with any society, there are a number of different factors to consider when trying to uncover and learn about the Aborigines culture. You can conduct general research or you can investigate the cultural aspects of the various aboriginal tribes.

The Aborigines of Australia are an ancient culture; but, many Aborigines continue to reside in Australia to this day, and they still practice their ancient ways of life.
